There is a lot of discussion on global insect extinction. Insect habitats are decreasing, becoming less diverse and fragmenting. Insects are important pollinators in large part of food production. There is cause for concern in Finland, too. Actions that help preserve habitats are important. Flower meadows and blooming roadsides, for example, are essential sources of nectar for many insects.

“An insect hotel” is a structure which has holes that are suitable for insects. These twig fences serve not only as an insect hotel but also as a hideout for birds. Hotels are being built elsewhere in the Kakslammi nature preserve, as well. You can help insects by purchasing or building an insect hotel in your yard (picture).
