Masmalo (Anthyllis vulneraria) has grown in Scandinavia ever since the post ice age steppes. After trees and other vegetation gained ground, masmalo has been struggling and these days you can find it only sparsely on eskers and dry fields. Masmalo does not tolerate competition well but it adapts smoothly to difficult growing conditions.

The species is divided into several subspecies that have adapted to different conditions, such as the endangered Anthyllis vulneraria subsp. polyphylla and the near threatened Anthyllis vulneraria subsp. lapponica. In Kakslammi area, one reason young seedling stands are uprooted is to help masmalo.
